Serving the Homeless Community in San Jose

In partnership with: Hands That Care, Bay Area

Vanitha served the homeless community along the embankments of San Jose in partnership with Hands That Care, Bay Area. Our volunteers came together early in the morning to pack and distribute food, clothing, and essential supplies directly to where people live — under flyovers, in parks, along embankments that are often overlooked, but very much inhabited by those who have no place to rest their head.

We provided

  • Meals and non-perishable food
  • Clothing, jackets, shoes, socks, and undergarments
  • Toiletries and hygiene essentials
  • Direct support for urgent needs through cash donations
In one case, a generous donation helped repair a stalled car so a woman fleeing domestic violence could safely continue her journey to reunite with her family.

What stayed with us most was the tone of the day. The people we served looked out for one another instinctively — redirecting items to those who needed them more, calling others over so no one missed out, noticing the dogs and cats that mattered deeply to their owners and making sure they were fed too. Our volunteers felt a quiet steadiness replace urgency. Gratitude flowed both ways. Several shared afterward that the experience recalibrated them — reminding us of our privileges and motivating us to do even more.

None of this happens without donors. Every bag packed, every meal served, every essential item handed over was made possible by people who chose to give — some donated money, others donated clothing, shoes, toiletries, socks, and supplies, many gave quietly and anonymously. This work matters because it is concrete and needed. It meets people where they are. And it turns generosity into immediate action.
